Humaira Islam, PhD oversees policy formulation, administration and fund management as Executive Director. Her career in microfinance spans over 25 years. She holds an MA in in Political Science, M. Phil Degree and PhD from Dhaka University. Her thesis was on women’s empowerment.
She founded Shakti Foundation as an institution for microfinance and gender issues, which provides services in financial empowerment and networking to the disadvantaged in partnership with financial institutions and banks, as well as leadership development, community development and enterprise development.
She is a Member of the Board of Trustees, Women’s World Banking (WWB), Executive Committee Member of INAFI, Asia Chapter, Member of the National Council of Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (DAB) Executive Committee member of "Utsho Bangladesh", Member of Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS), Member of Diabetic Association of Bangladesh, Member of National Caucus for Women’s Economic Empowerment Bangladesh, Founding Coordinator of Coalition of the Urban Poor (CUP).
Prior to founding Shakti Foundation, Dr. Humaira Islam worked in Manabik Sahajaya Sangstha (MSS) as Project Director; and at the Center for Integrated Rural Development Program for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) as a Research Associate. She began her career teaching English at Viqarunnisa Noon School and teaching English language and literature courses at Green Herald International School.
Dr. Humaira was an ASHOKA fellow and has received several awards including: Innovators for the Public 1994, Women’s World Banking ‘Excellence in Leadership’ Award, 2012 in Microcredit and Citi Micro entrepreneurship Award, 2011 by Citi Foundation.
Imran Ahmed - Deputy Executive Director, Head of Programs
Imran Ahmed is the Deputy Executive Director of Shakti Foundation for Disadvantaged Women. He is responsible for managing all programs of Shakti Foundation including Micro Finance, SME, Health and Renewable Energy. He also oversees the Training department and leads the Strategic Initiatives unit, which is focused on providing better services & digital inclusion to Shakti’s clients.
He was previously a Vice President at comScore Inc., a premier data analytics company based out of Washington D.C. USA, where he led Client Services and Product Leadership business units. Prior to joining comScore, Mr. Ahmed worked at McKinsey & Company, where he focused on operations and strategy.
Mr. Ahmed earned his MA in International Economics and Finance from Brandeis University, USA and his BA in Mathematics from Bard College, USA.
Asma Begum - Senior Director, Head of Human Resource Department
Asma Begum is the head of Human Resource Department of Shakti Foundation. Ms. Begum has started her career as a Credit Officer and reached the present position after serving in different capacities in different departments of Shakti since 1992. She has trainings in multiple arenas ranging from monitoring and evaluation, administrative skills development to project development & management. She has received trainings on Project Program Development and Management (PPDM) in Philippines (1996) and on business planning and financial modelling in USA.
Ms. Begum has an Honor’s & a Master’s degree in Sociology from Dhaka University.
Shariful Islam - Senior Director, Head of Administration, Solar & Enrich Program
Md. Shariful Islam is the head of Administration Department, Solar & Enrich Program of Shakti Foundation. With a humble start as a credit officer, Md. Shariful Islam, now a Senior Director, has spent almost a lifetime using his personal and professional experiences to serve Shakti Foundation in different capacities in departments like Microfinance, Human Resources, Solar and Enrich Program since 1992. He has been working successfully in Shakti for last 29 years, and knows every facet of the organization and its functions.
Mr. Islam has a Master’s degree in Economics and a Post-graduate Diploma in Personnel Management. He has also received trainings on Project Program Development and Management (PPDM) in Philippines in 1996.
Nazmul Ahsan - Senior Director, Head of Audit Department
Nazmul Ahsan is the head of Audit Department of Shakti Foundation. Mr. Ahsan has started his career as an accountant in Shakti Foundation in 1994, and reached the present position through career progression after serving in different capacities in different departments of Shakti Foundation. He formulates the internal control system within the organization, internal audits at the branches and head office among other responsibilities. He has received trainings on Project Program Development and Management (PPDM) in Philippines (1996), on Accounting and Finance from different institutions, on Microfinance in USA (1999), on Operational Risk Management in India (2005) and on MFI management in a changing Environment in Germany (2008).
Mr. Ahsan has a Master’s degree in Finance (1991) from Dhaka University. He has completed ICMA (intermediate) and is also an Income Tax Practitioner.
Sabya Sachi Roy - Senior Director, Head of IT Department
Sabya Sachi Roy is the head of IT Department of Shakti Foundation. He is responsible for software development and database management as well as policy changes in IT. He has been with Shakti Foundation for 23 years.
Mr. Roy has a Master’s degree in Commerce. He is a certified Administrator Professional for Oracle Database 11g and Lead Auditor on Information Security Management System ISO/IEC 27001:2005.
Md. Emdadul Hoque - Senior Director, Head of Microfinance Program & SME Program
Md. Emdadul Hoque is the head of Microfinance & SME program of Shakti Foundation. He has 30 years of extensive experience in microfinance, microenterprise and financial management activities. He has worked with various organizations including BRAC, UDDIPAN, and SAJIDA Foundation.
Mr. Hoque has done his Master in Management and an MBA with a Finance major. He is a member of Dhaka Taxes Bar Association (DTBA). He has been certified in microfinance and financial management from Boulder Institute of Microfinance in Italy and Mango in the UK.
Md. Yeasin Mollah, FCA - Senior Director, Head of Finance Department
Md Yeasin Mollah FCA is the head of Finance Department of Shakti Foundation. He has joined Shakti in 2021 as Senior Director and Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Yeasin in his over a period of 17 years career served in different organizations as head of finance & accounts namely National AgriCare Group, General Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Aegis Group, Multi Securities & Services Ltd. etc. He is a member of Dhaka Taxes Bar Association (DTBA), and an NBR authorized VAT Consultant. He also has attended various national & international seminars, conferences & trainings in areas related to finance, audit, leadership & communication.
Mr. Yeasin has attained his Honour’s & Master’s Degree in Accounting from Jagannath University in 1999 & 2000 respectively. In 2012, he was qualified as a Chartered Accountant from Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB), and became a fellow of the Institute in 2017. He has been rendering services to the institute in various capacities, and is currently involved as a member in different committees namely Taxation & Corporate Laws committee, Professional Development Committee, Articled Student committee etc.
Mohammad Nazrul Islam - Senior Director, Head of Training Department
Mohammad Nazrul Islam is responsible for overseeing the Training Department. He has joined Shakti Foundation in 2020 as Senior Director and Head of Training Department. Over a period of 26 years, he has served in different development organisations and NGOs namely- ARBAN, NIRAPAD, BWCCI and BURO Bangladesh in different capacities in Education, Disaster Management, Entrepreneurship Development, Financial Literacy, Digital Financial Services and Microfinance Program Management. He has vast expertise in individual and institutional capacity building.
Mr. Islam holds a Master’s degree in Sociology and Anthropology from Asian University of Bangladesh. He also has a Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing from Bangladesh Institute of Management (BIM) and Microfinance Management Development Program training from Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Manila, Philippines, and Entrepreneurship Development Training from HUMBER Institute of technology, Toronto, Canada.
Dr. Shamsher Ali Khan - Senior Advisor, Health Program
Dr. Shamsher Ali Khan serves as the Senior Adviser of Health Program of Shakti Foundation. He has over 37 years of experience in the field of Public Health and Hospital management around the globe. He has served and supervised 155 health centers along with 11 upgraded health centers of BRAC with EOC (Essential Obstetric Care) facilities and led different health programs in many countries of Asia and Europe. He has also led two 100 bed multidisciplinary hospitals by SAJIDA Foundation. He is specialized on strategy formulation, multidimensional program operation and research projects.
Dr. Khan has obtained his Master in Public Health from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand and Advanced Diploma in Reproductive Health from Uppsala University, Sweden after completing MBBS from Dhaka Medical College. He has attended national and international seminars, workshops and training, and has also made valuable contributions in policy advocacy for chronic health issues like Reproductive Health, Tuberculosis, Malaria, Maternal and Neonatal Health Care in association with USAID, WHO and other international agencies.
